Our Language Journey

Speech, language and communication are at the heart of our curriculum and learning here at Nursery. We believe in immersing children in language rich activities and books each and every day. This may be done through our book of the week, which Miss Scopes reads on our Famly app each week or through activities in our areas of provision. We use Tales Toolkit to develop story telling and imagination, we learn new language through our words of the week and our Wellcomm group times. Children are naturally curious and language is not only modelled by adults through play and teaching but also through those incidental times in setting. 

Children love to practise using the new language that they have learnt and this can often be heard in play throughout the nursery. 

Language is also developed through the Early Talk for York approach and using the ELKLAN language skills that staff developed through our training to gain our Communication Friendly Setting status.

We develop language through play and follow the ShREC approach, developed by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). Developmentally play is the foundation of learning and language development can be taught through the interactions between staff and children through this play. 

 We also use this approach as part of our staff professional development observing interactions with children and then giving feedback to our peers about how they can best develop these interactions.
